Washington, D.C. - Senator Thom Tillis recently appeared on Fox News' Your World with Neil Cavuto to discuss the importance of reducing America's reliance on China for pharmaceutical and medical supplies, as well as the future of U.S.-China relations. These discussions come in the wake of President Biden's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
During the interview, Senator Tillis commented on the issue of foreign direct investment in China, stating, "I think they've got serious problems. They've got a long-term problem because they're seeing a reduction in foreign direct investment in China. That's an indication that the world has woken up and decided that we've got to reduce our dependence on China for so many of our supply chains."
Highlighting the importance of alliances, Senator Tillis emphasized that China lacks the support and partnerships that the United States possesses: "They have a problem that we don't have, we have lots of allies. They don't have a lot of allies."
Expressing concerns about the current state of America's relationship with China, Senator Tillis stated, "I think that China is in a weaker position than they've been in some time, and it concerns me that this President won't go in playing with what I think is a strong hand. China has to behave differently for us to reward them in any way."
Regarding future American investments in China, Senator Tillis suggested approaching the issue differently, saying, "I think what we have got to do is look at China differently. I don't mind the idea of investments in China that are beneficial to the United States. I no longer want the pattern that we have seen over the last quarter-century of investments in China that make us more dependent on them."
Senator Tillis also stressed the need to reduce America's dependence on China, particularly in critical areas such as pharmaceutical supply chains and personal protective equipment (PPE). He highlighted the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, stating, "That has to change. We should have learned our lesson."
In conclusion, Senator Tillis emphasized the importance of promoting American and Western culture in China as a means to foster freedom and change. He stated, "I want American culture, Western culture known in China because that's a path to freedom and ultimately change in China."
As discussions on U.S.-China relations continue, Senator Tillis' insights shed light on the need for the United States to reduce its dependence on China for critical supplies while maintaining a firm stance on China's behavior.
