Reenie Askew, the Assistant City Manager and Chief Information Officer for the City of Charlotte, is responsible for providing strategic leadership in the area of community vitality. In an interview for this month's Fast Five, Askew shared insights into her role and what she is looking forward to in the new year.
Askew's portfolio includes departments and programs such as Community Relations, Charlotte Business Inclusion, Solid Waste Services, Charlotte Communication & Marketing, and Innovation & Technology. These departments play a crucial role in building and maintaining positive relationships between the city and its residents.
Reflecting on her decision to join the City of Charlotte, Askew stated, "If I knew what I know today, I would make the same decision." She moved to Charlotte in 2019 for family reasons but was attracted to the opportunity to lead the City of Charlotte Innovation & Technology department. Since then, she has been appointed as an Assistant City Manager, playing a key role in strategic planning and resource allocation.
As a business executive, Askew emphasizes the importance of seeing things through the eyes of the city's customers, including employees, council members, residents, and partners. Collaboration and synergy among departments are essential for a holistic approach to community development. Staying updated on emerging trends in community development, technology, and inclusive practices is vital to aligning with the city's priorities.
Askew also highlighted the role of technology in enhancing services and improving efficiency. She initiated the largest business transformation project in the city's history, implementing WorkDay as the enterprise resource planning system. This initiative, known as WorkSmart, aligns with the city's goal of well-managed government, emphasizing best practice processes, increased data transparency, and digital business capabilities.
When asked about her favorite places to eat brunch in Charlotte, Askew mentioned Napa on Providence and Link & Pin. She praised the duck confit and waffles at Napa on Providence and recommended Jinya, a minority-owned ramen bar in Uptown and South Park.
Looking ahead to the new year, Askew shared her personal affirmations instead of resolutions. She aims to show up as the best spouse, parent, grandparent, and friend, be an example leader and coworker, prioritize "me" time without guilt, and stay open to growth opportunities.
Askew expressed her gratitude for the welcoming and appreciative culture within the organization since she joined the city.
As Assistant City Manager and Chief Information Officer, Askew's leadership and vision will continue to play a crucial role in enhancing community vitality and driving innovation in the City of Charlotte.
