CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Jan. 19, 2024) - The Charlotte Urban Design Center (UDC) has officially opened the application windows for the 2024 Placemaking Grant and the 2024 Creative Pool. From now until March 15, individuals and businesses in Charlotte have the opportunity to apply for grants and join the Creative Pool.

The Placemaking Grant Program, now in its fifth consecutive year, aims to empower neighborhoods, individuals, and businesses to transform their communities with vibrant projects. With a grant pool of $150,000 available, grants ranging from $1,000 to $25,000 will be awarded.

Monica Holmes, deputy director of the Planning, Design & Development Department, described the Placemaking Grant as a unique resource that connects community members with the funding and design assistance needed to bring their ideas to life. She expressed excitement about the creative proposals received each year and the potential for building safer, healthier, and more distinctive places in Charlotte.

The Placemaking Creative Pool Program, on the other hand, helps match local creatives with project opportunities throughout the city. Project managers can select artists from the Creative Pool, or artists can showcase their own abilities and vie for projects. The Creative Pool is composed of a diverse group of creatives who specialize in managing, creating, and implementing original compositions.

To provide more information and answer questions, the UDC will be hosting a virtual Q&A session on Thursday, Feb. 15, as well as an in-person session at the Charlotte Urban Design Center's studio on Thursday, Feb. 29. Both sessions will take place from 6-8 p.m.

The Placemaking Program was launched in 2018 by the UDC with the goal of transforming underutilized public spaces through urban design and placemaking. Community members interested in completing projects in their neighborhoods can find valuable resources at the Placemaking Hub, an online resource center. The Placemaking Hub streamlines city processes, promotes collaboration, and helps achieve public space goals.

For those interested in applying for the Placemaking Grant or joining the Creative Pool, visit the respective web pages on the UDC's website. To stay updated on the UDC's activities, subscribe to their newsletter and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
