WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Thom Tillis paid tribute to fallen Greensboro Police Sergeant Philip Dale Nix during his remarks on the Senate floor. Sgt. Nix tragically lost his life while off-duty after confronting two suspects who were stealing from a store.

In his speech, Senator Tillis highlighted the exceptional qualities of Sgt. Nix, stating, "Sergeant Nix embodied the very best of law enforcement. He was a consummate professional, a good and decent person, and was beloved by the community of Greensboro." Senator Tillis also acknowledged Sgt. Nix's family's long-standing commitment to public service, saying, "For as impressive as Sergeant Nix was for his exemplary work in uniform, it was his job as a family man, a loving husband, a father, and a son that made him the man he was."

Senator Tillis used the occasion to advocate for the protection of law enforcement officers and the need for stronger penalties for those who intentionally harm them. He referred to the Protect and Serve Act, a bill he introduced in the previous Congress, which makes it a federal crime to cause bodily injury to a law enforcement officer. Senator Tillis expressed his intention to reintroduce the bill in the current Congress, emphasizing the importance of bipartisan support. He urged Americans to voice their support for law enforcement by contacting their Senators and Congressmen, stating, "Tell them that you want to protect law enforcement officers by enhancing the penalties for criminals who target them. The men and women in blue are heroes. We have to have their back."

The tragic loss of Sgt. Nix serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. Senator Tillis' call for enhanced protections and stronger penalties aims to ensure the safety and well-being of those who risk their lives to protect their communities. As the nation mourns the loss of Sgt. Nix, the Senator's words serve as a rallying cry for support and recognition of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers across the country.
