In a collaborative effort with the community and city departments, the Charlotte City Council approved the SAFE Charlotte plan in October 2020. As part of this plan, the council has allocated $1 million to support non-profit organizations in addressing violence in the community.

The grant aims to provide funds for program implementation and foster collaboration between organizations to offer comprehensive support to residents. It follows an equitable process that reflects community priorities and seeks to strengthen relationships between partner organizations and the people of Charlotte.

Focusing on addressing the pressing issue of youth crimes and violence, the grant prioritizes proposals that include evidence-based or informed programs to prevent such incidents. The council recognizes the importance of proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the city's youth.

"We are committed to providing support to organizations that are working tirelessly to address violence in our community," said a spokesperson from the city council. "This grant will enable them to implement effective programs and collaborate with other organizations to create a more holistic approach to tackling this issue."

The application process for the SAFE Charlotte Grant opens on February 5, 2024, and will close on March 15, 2024. Organizations interested in applying for the grant are encouraged to sign up for an optional review session on February 15th, 2024.

Selected organizations will be announced on May 6, 2024, and the contract period will begin on July 1, 2024. This timeline allows for a thorough evaluation of proposals and ensures that the chosen organizations have ample time to prepare for the implementation of their programs.

The Charlotte City Council remains committed to creating a safer and more secure community for all its residents, particularly the youth. By investing in evidence-based programs and fostering collaboration among organizations, they aim to address the root causes of violence and create long-lasting positive change.
