WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Thom Tillis and 42 of his Senate Republican colleagues have penned a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, urging the Senate to proceed with an impeachment trial for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

The senators emphasized the need for the Senate to fulfill its constitutional duty, with Senator Tillis stating, "We write to demand that the Senate uphold its constitutional responsibility to properly adjudicate the House of Representatives’ impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas." They pointed out concerns regarding border control under Mayorkas's leadership, calling the situation a "national security disaster" with millions of encounters at the southern border since President Biden took office.

Highlighting the constitutional framework for impeachment proceedings, the senators noted, “The House of Representatives exercised its sole ‘Power of Impeachment’... Never before has the Senate abandoned this duty, even when certain members believed the basis for impeachment was tenuous at best.”

The letter concluded with a plea for a Senate trial to allow the American people to hear the evidence against Mayorkas, stating, “The American people deserve to hear the evidence through a Senate trial in the Court of Impeachment. Therefore, we implore you to hold a trial, as has been done in every similar case in the Senate’s 235 years of existence.”

The full letter can be accessed for further details on the senators' demands.
