Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles has officially declared May 2024 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Charlotte. This proclamation aims to celebrate the diverse histories, cultures, and contributions of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community in the city.
The proclamation recognizes the significant presence of more than 60,000 AAPI residents who have played a vital role in shaping Charlotte into a diverse, welcoming, and innovative city. Mayor Vi Lyles encourages all citizens to join in celebrating the rich heritage and resilience of their Asian American and Pacific Islander neighbors, colleagues, and friends throughout the month of May.
The roots of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month date back to the establishment of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week in 1978, culminating in the month-long celebration we know today. The month of May holds historical significance, commemorating the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in the United States on May 7, 1843, and the contributions of Chinese workers to the transcontinental railroad completed on May 10, 1869.
The community-organized celebration of the AAHNPI Heritage Month in Charlotte, starting with the Asian Festival in 2000, has been a consistent tribute to the cultural richness and diversity of the AAPI community. Despite challenges, this annual celebration continues to honor the extraordinary contributions of immigrants, residents, and citizens of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander origin.
As Mecklenburg County remains home to a significant population of AAHNPI residents, the city of Charlotte acknowledges and appreciates the invaluable contributions made by this community. Mayor Vi Alexander Lyles' proclamation solidifies the city's commitment to recognizing and honoring the heritage and achievements of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in Charlotte.
