CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 24, 2024) – The City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services has released its collection schedule for the upcoming summer holidays.
For Memorial Day on Monday, May 27, collection services will proceed as scheduled with no delays in garbage, recycling, yard waste, and scheduled bulky waste services.
On Juneteenth, Wednesday, June 19, there will be no collection of garbage, recycling, yard waste, or scheduled bulky waste. Solid Waste Services will operate on a one-day delay following the holiday. Consequently, Friday customers will receive service on Saturday, June 22. This week will also be an orange recycling collection week.
Independence Day falls on Thursday, July 4. Collection services for that week will occur as planned without any delays in garbage, recycling, yard waste, and scheduled bulky waste services.
Labor Day is Monday, September 2. Similar to Memorial Day and Independence Day schedules, there will be no changes to the collection services during this period.
The announcement also serves as a reminder regarding the proper disposal of household hazardous waste during the summer months when activities such as grilling increase the use of charcoal and lighter fluid. Improper disposal can lead to fires in collection trucks and pose risks to residents and workers.
Residents are advised to ensure charcoal is fully cooled before placing it in garbage carts to prevent fires. Disposal instructions on product labels should be followed to minimize risks of products exploding or igniting. Household hazardous wastes should not be mixed with other products due to potential dangers but can alternatively be taken to one of Mecklenburg County’s full-service centers.
Solid Waste Services offers text updates for residents about service impacts. Residents can receive these updates by texting their collection day (e.g., “Thursday”) to 73224.
