Mecklenburg County has issued a warning to its property owners regarding a suspicious letter demanding payment for property tax. The letter claims recipients are delinquent on their tax payments and includes a phone number to call to avert further action.

According to the county, the entity behind this letter is not associated with Mecklenburg County or its Office of the Tax Collector. The county advises residents to be cautious when providing personal or financial information to unknown organizations.

The letter might reference actual property tax delinquencies, as this information is public. Tax bills for 2024 became delinquent after January 6, 2025, and these unpaid bills were published on April 6 in the Charlotte Observer, following North Carolina statute.

Mecklenburg County provides legitimate resources for property tax assistance. Among these are:

- **N.C. Property Tax Relief:** This includes various exemptions for seniors, disabled residents, veterans, and businesses. Most require applications to be submitted to the Mecklenburg County Assessor's Office by June 1. More details are available at CAO.MeckNC.gov or by calling 980-314-4226.

- **HOMES:** The "Helping Out Mecklenburg’s homeowners with Economic Support" program offers grants to reduce the cost of homeownership. Applications typically begin on July 1 and more information is available at MeckNC.gov/4HOMES.

Property owners with questions or concerns about suspicious communications or their property tax status are encouraged to contact the Office of the Tax Collector at 704-336-7600 or via email at [email protected].
