On September 1, 2024, Charlotte FC faced a narrow defeat against Atlanta United with a single goal from Jay Fortune securing the win for the visitors.
The match began on a positive note for Charlotte FC, who fielded a lineup including Kahlina, Byrne, Malanda, Ream, Uronen, Westwood, Bronico, Biel, Abada, Vargas, and Swiderski. Both teams introduced their new Designated Players in attacking midfield: Pep Biel for Charlotte and Alexey Miranchuk for Atlanta.
In the opening 20 minutes, Charlotte created several chances but failed to convert them into goals. Karol Swiderski and Kerwin Vargas managed to get headers on target but lacked the power or direction to trouble Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan. Atlanta's Xande Silva also had an opportunity in the 20th minute but missed the target.
Pep Biel showcased his skills in the 24th minute with a left-footed shot that was deflected and saved by Guzan. As both teams exchanged half-chances, CLTFC goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina made significant saves to keep his team in contention. Notably, he denied Jamal Thiare’s header in the 36th minute and thwarted Saba Lobjanidze’s close-range effort just before halftime.
Despite Atlanta's increasing pressure towards the end of the first half, Charlotte's defense held firm to maintain a goalless draw at halftime.
In the second half, Kahlina continued his strong performance with three crucial saves early on. However, Jay Fortune broke through in the 55th minute with a shot from outside the box that found its way past Kahlina for Atlanta's only goal of the match.
Charlotte FC Head Coach Dean Smith responded quickly by making substitutions that shifted momentum back in favor of his team. Patrick Agyemang replaced Karol Swiderski and Djibril Diani came in for Brandt Bronico. Agyemang nearly equalized twice shortly after entering but was denied by Guzan.
Charlotte pushed hard for an equalizer with several more attempts from their substitutes creating opportunities. Despite these efforts and maintaining offensive pressure while guarding against counterattacks from Atlanta’s forwards like Lobjanidze and Daniel Rios (a former Charlotte striker), they could not find the back of the net.
Kahlina made another critical save late into stoppage time to deny Tyler Wolff and prevent further damage. The match concluded with a 1-0 victory for Atlanta United ending their four-match losing streak on away games.
This loss adds urgency to Charlotte's upcoming matches against CF Montreal and Orlando City as they vie for playoff spots.
