The Panthers announced their captains for the 2024 season on Wednesday, marking a blend of veteran leadership and fresh faces in head coach Dave Canales' inaugural season.
Captains were selected through a player vote, resulting in quarterback Bryce Young, defensive tackle Derrick Brown, linebacker Shaq Thompson, and safety Sam Franklin Jr. being chosen.
Thompson is serving as a team captain for the fifth season. The 2015 first-round pick has established himself as one of the senior figures in the locker room. Young has been named a captain for the second consecutive season, while Brown and Franklin received this honor for the first time.
Brown earned Pro Bowl recognition last year after setting a league record with 103 tackles by a defensive tackle, securing a long-term contract extension during the offseason. Franklin, currently on injured reserve due to a preseason foot injury but expected to return later this season, is acknowledged as one of the top special teams players in the league.
Canales mentioned that he also plans to appoint a rotating captain on a weekly basis alongside the four permanent captains.
