Dave Canales, the head coach of the Carolina Panthers, recently shared his interaction with linebacker Shaq Thompson following Thompson's surgery for an Achilles tear. Despite just coming out of surgery, Thompson was more interested in discussing team practice than his own health update. "He wanted to know how practice went," Canales recounted.
Thompson's dedication is echoed by teammate Jaycee Horn, who recalled Thompson's supportive nature during injuries. "That's just his personality," Horn said.
Thompson continues to influence the team even from afar, coaching rookie linebacker Trevin Wallace before his first start. Canales praised Thompson's leadership: "For a first-time head coach, I can't say enough what it means for a veteran guy like Shaq Thompson to send me texts after the games."
In other injury updates, several players were present at practice but did not participate fully. Linebacker Josey Jewell and receiver Diontae Johnson are recovering from injuries sustained in recent games. Guard Damien Lewis returned to practice with a brace on his arm after a UCL injury.
The Panthers have also welcomed back Dane Jackson and Ian Thomas to limited practice roles this week as they continue their recovery process. Defensive back Caleb Farley has been added to the practice squad, bringing local talent back home.
The offensive line has maintained strong performance despite missing Lewis due to injury. Chandler Zavala stepped in effectively during Week 4 against the Bengals.
On the quarterback front, Andy Dalton and Bryce Young maintain a strong relationship despite recent changes in starting roles. Dalton expressed appreciation for Young's continued support: "It's meant so much for him to handle the situation the way he has."
