Grant Williams, recently traded to the Charlotte Hornets, reflects on a conversation from nearly a decade ago. At that time, the team was transitioning back to its original name and colors. "I remember talking to one of my good friends at the time and he said the Hornets could be special," Williams recalled. This sentiment has stayed with him as he aims to make a significant impact in his hometown.

Williams, drafted 19th overall in 2019, has had an impressive career thus far. He was part of four playoff teams in Boston and reached the NBA Finals two years ago before joining Dallas last summer. His tenure there was short-lived as he was traded to Charlotte along with Seth Curry and a protected 2027 first-round pick for PJ Washington and two second-round picks.

Back in Charlotte, Williams thrived, especially when used as a small-ball center. In 29 games with 10 starts, he averaged 13.9 points on 50.3% shooting – including 37.3% from three-point range – along with 5.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. Despite injuries keeping him from playing alongside key teammates like LaMelo Ball or Mark Williams, he explored different aspects of his game.

His usage rate increased significantly after the trade due to more ball-handling responsibilities, leading to improved statistics such as doubling his free-throw attempts and almost doubling his assists per game.

Williams' performance on the court was matched by his leadership off it. Teammate Miles Bridges noted Williams' influence: "[Grant] had a conversation with me, Mark, LaMelo, and Brandon [Miller] about staying on us in the summer... Grant’s brought a big leadership role and winning perspective."

The Hornets have faced numerous injuries recently but remain optimistic about their future potential with Williams emphasizing discipline and health management: “It’s a matter of discipline and understanding what it takes to win... The best ability is availability."

Williams also wants to foster a strong homecourt atmosphere for fans: “We have a lot of Charlotte fans... It’s our job to put a good product on the court."

As both a player and native of Charlotte, Williams feels responsible for helping maximize the Hornets' potential and making them "special" once again.
