DENVER — The Panthers began their game with promise, but ultimately fell to the Broncos 28-14 at Empower Field at Mile High. The loss brought the Panthers' season record to 1-7.
The Panthers' defense, with three returning starters in the front seven, initially forced a turnover. Quarterback Bryce Young, starting due to Andy Dalton's injury from a car accident, led an efficient opening drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Xavier Legette.
However, after this initial success, the Panthers struggled. Young completed 5-of-5 passes for 39 yards on the first drive but only managed 21 yards on 6-of-9 passing before halftime. The defense also faltered despite welcoming back key players like A'Shawn Robinson and Jadeveon Clowney. They did manage two turnovers, both involving Shy Tuttle recovering fumbles.
Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix excelled in the first half with 220 passing yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown. He finished with 284 passing yards and four total touchdowns.
Young concluded the game with 224 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Undrafted rookie Jalen Coker was a standout for the Panthers with four catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.
In an attempt to spark momentum, the Panthers attempted a fake punt deep in their territory during the third quarter. Punter Johnny Hekker's pass to Sam Franklin Jr. was incomplete, leading to favorable field position for Denver and resulting in another Broncos touchdown.
The Panthers also faced injuries during the game. DJ Johnson left with an ankle injury while Feleipe Franks suffered a concussion. Left tackle Ikem Ekwonu briefly exited after rolling his ankle but returned following one play off-field where Kingston filled in.
