Today, Senator Thom Tillis expressed his continued opposition to the Biden Administration's nomination of Ryan Park for the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. His remarks were made during a Senate Judiciary Committee markup.
Senator Tillis criticized the White House counsel's handling of the nomination process. "The White House counsel proved to be absolutely incompetent," he stated. He further explained that he was presented with a list of four nominees, including "Ted Budd’s opponent in a Senate election, someone who is patently partisan and has a track record to substantiate it." In response, when he offered his own list of candidates, they were dismissed as unfit even for district court judge positions.
Regarding bipartisan opposition to Park's nomination on the Senate floor, Senator Tillis commented on the nominee's slim chances of confirmation without strategic maneuvers by Democratic colleagues. "I know that this nominee has no prayer of getting confirmed by the full U.S. Senate unless Chuck Schumer and my colleagues on the other side of the aisle play a game and wait for a funeral or an illness to cause an absentee problem on our side," he said. Tillis also confirmed his confidence in having enough votes to block Park's confirmation.
