Senator Thom Tillis recently appeared on Fox News' "Your World with Neil Cavuto" to address the pressing need for federal assistance for those impacted by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina. The senator emphasized the necessity of a disaster supplemental fund, estimating a requirement of around $100 billion, with approximately $50 billion needed specifically for North Carolina.
"I believe that we need that disaster supplemental at about $100 billion there's nearly an estimate of $50 billion in North Carolina alone," stated Senator Tillis. He urged Congress members opposing this measure to reconsider their stance and not confuse disaster aid with debt reduction efforts.
Highlighting the severity of the situation, Senator Tillis noted that Asheville experienced 52 days without drinkable water, only regaining access two and a half weeks ago. He stressed that recovery will take years and called for politics to be set aside in favor of helping affected areas including western North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. These regions have been hit by multiple hurricanes such as Helene, Milton, and Debbie.
"Asheville went 52 days without drinkable water... It is a dire situation... We shouldn't be playing games with people's lives," he remarked. He further warned against political maneuvering in relief efforts: "And if you enter politics into the room, you'll spend some quality time with me on the floor."
