In January 2024, Judge James Wynn of the Fourth Circuit announced his retirement, prompting a nomination process for his successor and a series of honors. These included a retirement party and awards such as the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. However, Wynn later reversed his decision due to Donald Trump's election, an action described as "a blatantly partisan political move," which may lead to ethics complaints and recusal demands.
"White House officials confirmed to McClatchy Tuesday morning that Wynn announced he is taking senior status, meaning he will semi-retire, after 14 years of serving in the 4th Circuit,” according to McClatchy.
A celebration was held at Providence Baptist Church in Robersonville on March 10 to honor Wynn's accomplishments and contributions. More than 100 people attended this event, which also marked his 70th birthday. "When Judge James A. Wynn Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit announced his semi-retirement, he had no idea that his hometown community had a surprise celebration in store for him," reported Greenville Daily Reflector.
During the celebration, Governor Roy Cooper presented Wynn with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award, North Carolina's highest civilian honor. "The top secret of the day was Brown’s presentation of The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award to Wynn," noted Rocky Mountain Telegram.
Additionally, March 10 was proclaimed "Jim Wynn Day" by one of Robersonville’s commissioners. The Rocky Mount chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity also honored him with an award.
Congressman Don Davis recognized Wynn's service with a special Congressional Recognition on behalf of the U.S. House of Representatives' 1st District.
Former President Barack Obama sent warm wishes: “I hope today is full of warm memories from your friends and loved ones. And I’m sending you and Jaqueline my very best for all that lies ahead.”
Governor Roy Cooper expressed gratitude: “I am grateful for the work you have done, my best wishes for your very happy birthday and much-deserved semi-retirement.”
