Charlotte Fire Department faced a challenging week during the holiday season, responding to an array of emergencies, including two multi-alarm fires. From December 21 to December 26, the department managed 1,892 incidents ranging from structure fires and vehicle accidents to medical calls and fire alarms.
Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson praised the team's resilience and dedication, stating, “This week has tested us in ways that few others have, but it also highlighted the incredible resilience, skill, and heart of our team.”
On December 21, a structure fire on Briarwick Lane was quickly controlled by Charlotte Fire crews. The fire caused $57,000 in damages but no injuries were reported. The following day saw a tragic apartment fire on Park Road resulting in one fatality and $175,000 in damages. This incident was attributed to an unattended candle.
Later on December 22, firefighters responded to an arson case at a vacant home on Lasalle Street causing $15,000 in damages. On Christmas Eve, a house fire erupted in Harris Ridge with damages estimated at $150,000. Fortunately, no injuries occurred due to the presence of working smoke alarms.
Christmas Day brought further challenges with a fatal apartment fire on Spanish Quarter Circle caused by unattended candles. Two residents died from their injuries despite rescue efforts. Another incident involved a chimney malfunction leading to a two-alarm fire on Callander Court causing $125,000 in damages.
The week concluded with a rooftop fire on Steele Creek Road handled efficiently without injuries or significant damage. Additionally, Charlotte Fire addressed an eight-car accident on I-85 ensuring safety and minimal disruption.
Chief Johnson emphasized the collaborative efforts across all divisions within the department: “This week’s success was not the work of one individual or even one team. It was the combined effort of every division and every person in this department.”
