Austin Corbett, a Carolina Panthers offensive lineman, has been named the 2024 recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award. This award is given annually and voted on by teammates to honor "commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage" and symbolizes "professionalism, great strength, and dedication."
Corbett's career with the Panthers has been marked by resilience. He suffered an ACL injury in 2022, a knee injury in 2023, and a biceps tear in the recent season. Despite these setbacks, he has consistently worked towards returning to play.
"As soon as I got hurt, I knew that's what was gonna happen," Corbett stated regarding his injuries. "It's just a matter of getting back to that state."
Before his latest injury, Corbett played center for the first time this year after previously playing guard. In five games as center, he allowed only seven quarterback pressures over 174 pass-blocking snaps.
"So there's obviously the differences of guard is definitely more physically demanding... But centers, it's the mental side of it," said Corbett about his position change.
Corbett's attitude and dedication have made him a role model for his teammates. After winning a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams, he joined Carolina seeking new challenges.
"I wanted to be part of the grind and helping young guys set a foundation," Corbett admitted about joining the Panthers.
His efforts were recognized when he was also nominated for the Salute to Service Award due to his work with military communities.
