The Panthers are in Indianapolis for the NFL Combine, focusing on college prospects. However, during a Tuesday interview at the scouting combine, Panthers general manager Dan Morgan provided updates on several of the team's free agents.
A key focus is cornerback Jaycee Horn, who is not yet a free agent. Morgan expressed hope that an extension for Horn would be finalized in the coming weeks. Horn is currently in the final year of his rookie contract after the team picked up his fifth-year option. Executive Vice President of Football Operations Brandt Tilis is negotiating with Horn's representatives.
"They're talking; things are moving along, so hopefully, we get something done there sooner than later," Morgan stated.
Securing Horn would be significant for a team that finished last in defense last season and aims to rebuild around players like Horn and Derrick Brown.
Morgan also addressed other free agents among the 21 unrestricted ones they have this offseason. The team plans to retain center Austin Corbett and backup Cade Mays to maintain their offensive line group. Despite speculation about Taylor Moton's future due to his cap number, Morgan indicated they intend to keep him under his current deal but may revisit it later.
Regarding kicker Eddy Piñeiro, Morgan said he will be allowed to test the market while they explore other options after signing Matthew Wright recently.
"We are going to let Eddy test the market; his agents can be here; they can kind of see what his value is," Morgan commented. "Definitely not going to close the door on that, but at the same time, we will be actively looking."
The team also wishes to bring back punter Johnny Hekker and is in discussions about it. This move could provide stability on special teams with Hekker's experience as a holder alongside JJ Jansen.
Tight end Tommy Tremble was also mentioned as a player they want to re-sign.
