With the NFL free agency period approaching, the Carolina Panthers are gearing up for a busy month. The league year kicks off on March 12 at 4 p.m., allowing teams to sign players and execute trades. Starting March 10, agents can negotiate with teams, although deals will only be finalized by March 12.

The Panthers have several decisions to make, with 21 unrestricted free agents on their roster this year. The focus is primarily on defensive players, particularly safeties. General Manager Dan Morgan emphasized the priority of improving the defense following last year's efforts to bolster the offensive line. He also expressed hope for an early contract extension for cornerback Jaycee Horn.

In terms of retaining key players, veteran quarterback Andy Dalton has re-signed for two years, remaining as backup to Bryce Young. Dalton's contributions were noted by both coaches and teammates throughout last season. Additionally, long snapper JJ Jansen has secured another one-year deal to continue his franchise-record tenure of 260 games played.

The team has made other notable moves: linebacker Shaq Thompson will enter free agency after serving as a five-time team captain; cornerback Dane Jackson was released after starting three games last season.

Furthermore, the Panthers have signed several players to reserve/future contracts in preparation for the upcoming season.

Looking ahead, the Panthers hold nine picks in this year's draft, including eight selections within the first five rounds and the No. 8 overall pick.
