Charlotte-Mecklenburg is joining North Carolina in observing Severe Weather Preparedness Week from March 2 to March 8. The initiative, led by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office, aims to raise awareness about flood risks and encourage residents to prepare for emergencies.

In the previous year, the region experienced significant rainfall exceeding four feet. Hurricanes Helene and Debby also contributed to widespread flooding in the area. These events highlighted the necessity of being prepared for severe weather conditions.

Residents are urged to stay informed as severe weather can occur at any time, with increased risks during spring and summer. Thunderstorms and flash floods are particularly hazardous, capable of causing flooding even outside designated floodplains. It is advised that residents check if their homes are located in flood-prone areas by visiting StormWater.CharMeck.org.

Preparedness measures include signing up for CharMeckAlerts for emergency notifications, developing a household emergency plan, and staying updated through local weather channels. It's important to note that standard insurance policies do not cover flooding; however, the National Flood Insurance Program offers coverage options accessible through Floodsmart.gov.

Don Ceccarelli, Mecklenburg County’s Storm Water Services director, emphasized proactive measures: "One of the ways we can protect our loved ones is to be proactive in taking actions before a flood event." He suggested storing valuables higher up in homes, using flood-resistant materials during renovations, purchasing flood insurance, and considering home elevation as preventive steps.

A media advisory has been issued for March 5 at 10 a.m., where staff from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services and the Emergency Management Office will discuss severe weather preparedness and safety tips. Further details will be provided closer to the date.
