Mecklenburg County residents have until March 31 to apply for assistance with their energy bills. The Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) is one of several initiatives aimed at helping households meet their immediate energy needs, ensuring they do not have to choose between heating and other basic necessities.
Applicants are not required to be behind on their energy bills to receive a one-time LIEAP payment, which can range from $300 to $500 depending on the primary heating source. Eligibility criteria include having at least one eligible U.S. citizen or legal resident in the household, being responsible for heating costs, and meeting specific income requirements.
To apply, individuals must provide identification, a utility bill, a Social Security number, and proof of income. Applications can be submitted online via North Carolina ePASS, by mail to 301 Billingsley Road in Charlotte, by email, or in person at designated centers such as the Wallace H. Kuralt Center and others listed in Charlotte. Additionally, applications can be completed over the phone by calling 704-336-3000.
If approved, payments will be made directly to the applicant's utility company and may take four to six weeks to process. Since applications opened on December 1, 2024, more than 5,000 have been approved for funding.
Devon Kilpatrick, an energy program manager stated: “Access to affordable heating is essential for the well-being of individuals and families especially during the winter months.” Kilpatrick added that the program provides "critical financial support" for managing heating costs.
