Senators Thom Tillis, Chris Coons, John Cornyn, and Michael Bennet have introduced the Medical Supply Chain Resiliency Act. This bipartisan bill aims to enhance the United States' capacity to engage in trade negotiations to ensure the efficient delivery of critical medical goods and services domestically and internationally.

"The Medical Supply Chain Resiliency Act is a critical step toward ensuring that America’s healthcare providers have reliable access to the essential supplies they need," stated Senator Tillis. He emphasized the importance of strengthening trade partnerships and expanding domestic manufacturing to improve national preparedness for future health challenges.

Senator Bennet highlighted the current reliance on China for medical supply chains as a risk to U.S. national security and public health. "Our bipartisan bill will address this vulnerability by authorizing the President to deepen relationships with our trading partners," he said.

Senator Cornyn pointed out the shortages faced during the pandemic due to overreliance on foreign sources like China. He noted that this legislation would enable trade negotiations with trusted allies for medical goods, ensuring better preparedness for future global health crises.

Senator Coons added, "Life-threatening shortages of testing kits, drugs, and masks during the COVID-19 pandemic showed us just how fragile our medical supply chains are." He stressed working with trusted trading partners to strengthen response capabilities for future emergencies while ensuring access to essential medical products.

Soumi Saha from Premier Inc. commended the senators and representatives for their leadership in reinforcing healthcare supply chain resilience. She noted that building a sustainable supply chain requires balancing domestic manufacturing expansion with strategic trade partnerships.

John Murphy from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce expressed strong support for the act, emphasizing its role in enhancing public health and national security by negotiating trade agreements with trusted allies.

PhRMA highlighted potential benefits of authorizing meaningful trade agreements with partners like the European Union, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. They encourage embracing this pathway to expand trade with allies.
