Jaycee Horn is stepping into a leadership role with the Carolina Panthers, following his recent contract extension. As he returns to the locker room, changes are evident, including the removal of Shaq Thompson's nameplate, signifying Thompson's departure as a free agent.
Horn, alongside Derrick Brown, finds himself at a pivotal moment on a team in transition. "It's different now," Horn stated. Reflecting on his growth and the influence of past leaders like Thompson, Horn acknowledges the responsibility he now carries. "We've just got to do it, and do it the right way," he said.
During his rookie season, Thompson encouraged Horn to address the defense despite his initial nerves. This experience taught him about accountability and leadership within the team. Even after injuries cut short his rookie year, Thompson's encouragement helped Horn maintain focus.
Horn's efforts were recognized with a Pro Bowl selection last season. Panthers head coach Dave Canales praised Horn's dedication: "I saw him give us something so solid and stable for other guys to see."
The Panthers have been active in free agency to bolster their defense following last year's struggles. With new additions and Horn's leadership, there's optimism for improvement. Horn expressed determination: "We should be pissed off when we get to Week 1."
As preparations continue for the upcoming season, Horn remains committed to leading by example and fostering teamwork among new teammates.
