Mark Jerrell, chair of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, delivered the annual State of the County address on March 19, 2025. In his speech, he described the state of Mecklenburg County as "strong and robust," attributing this to the diverse workforce, educational institutions, local economy, and community values.

Jerrell emphasized that diversity will continue to be a driving force for the county's strength and resilience. He stated that the county is committed to addressing citizens' needs and concerns as they arise.

The address highlighted collaboration with community partners and improvements in residents' lives. Last year, the Board's budget priorities included $153 million in new funding. Jerrell provided updates on accomplishments and challenges within several key areas: early childhood development, educational attainment, environmental stewardship, health access, housing insecurity, workforce development, and racial disparities.

Additionally, Jerrell discussed legislative priorities and economic development for the county. He noted a projected slowdown in revenue growth that will necessitate important decisions by the Board of County Commissioners to maintain services while being fiscally responsible.
