The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $3.7 million grant to the Charlotte Area Transit Center from its Low or No Emission Grant Program, Charlotte officials said in a Facebook post on July 2.

The Transit Center (CATS) will use the funds for battery-electric buses, which will also have a charging station and include maintenance and training for the new system and equipment, officials said in the Facebook post

"CATS has made a commitment to reduce emissions and invest in battery electric vehicles as part of the Strategic Energy Action Plan and American Cities Climate Challenge," CATS Chief Executive Officer John Lewis said in the Facebook post. "This grant is a great first step. We’re excited to continue our investment in sustainable transit as battery-electric bus technology advances,”

CATS isn't the only center receiving funding for projects. There are a total of 41 projects receiving grants that total $130 million, the Facebook post noted.

“This is another great example of Charlotte leading by example in building a climate-resilient future, made possible through a collaborative citywide strategy and approach," Sarah Hazel, interim chief officer of Resiliency & Sustainability, said in the Facebook post.
