City of Charlotte issued the following announcement on Nov. 20.
On Monday, Charlotte City Council members voted unanimously to designate Juneteenth Independence Day as an official, city-recognized holiday. Beginning next year, Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, will be observed as a paid holiday for City of Charlotte employees.
The Juneteenth celebration marks the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, received news that the Civil War had ended and the enslaved had been freed.
Juneteenth Independence Day became a federally recognized holiday in 2021. At least 21 states and the District of Columbia have designated Juneteenth as a permanent paid and/or observed holiday through adopted legislation or executive action in recognition of the emancipation of all enslaved people in the United States.
