WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Thom Tillis and his colleagues are urging the Biden Administration to take action against Iran's nuclear activities. In a letter addressed to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the senators emphasized the need for censuring Iran for its nuclear buildup.
The senators highlighted the alarming increase in Iran's nuclear enrichment activities, stating, "In December, the IAEA issued a report showing that Iran’s nuclear enrichment activity tripled by the end of last year." They emphasized the importance of addressing Iran's behavior and sending a clear message that rogue nuclear programs, especially from a state sponsor of terrorism, will not be tolerated.
Pointing out Iran's history of destabilizing behavior in the Middle East, the senators cited recent escalations following attacks by Iran's proxy Hamas on Israel in October 2023. They noted that Tehran's "Axis of Resistance" has been involved in numerous attacks against U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria, as well as targeting international shipping vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
In calling for further action, the senators urged the U.S. delegation at the IAEA to advocate for Iran's nuclear program to be formally reviewed by the United Nations Security Council. They emphasized the importance of upholding global non-proliferation norms and maintaining a consistent standard in addressing Iran's nuclear advancements, cautioning against appeasement strategies that could lead to further escalations.
The letter from Senator Tillis and his colleagues underscores the pressing need to address Iran's nuclear activities and the risks they pose to regional and global security. The call for censure at the IAEA reflects a strong stance against Iran's nuclear buildup and sends a message of deterrence against rogue nuclear programs.
