Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services is gearing up to celebrate its sixth annual Creek Week, inviting residents to 'creek it up a notch' and participate in a week full of learning opportunities and volunteer events. The event is scheduled to take place from Saturday, March 16, through Saturday, March 23.
The organization highlights the importance of creeks, stating that Charlotte-Mecklenburg has more than 50 named creeks spanning over 3,000 miles. Despite being often overlooked, these creeks play a vital role in the ecosystem of the city.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, storm drains in the city carry untreated stormwater runoff directly to the creeks, leading to the accumulation of trash, pet waste, oils, and pollutants. Creek Week aims to raise awareness about this issue and engage the community in efforts to clean up and protect these natural resources.
The week-long event offers a variety of activities for all ages, including nature hikes, fishing events, creek cleanups, and educational tours. Residents are encouraged to participate in these events to learn more about the local creeks and contribute to their preservation.
Events will be held across Charlotte-Mecklenburg, providing residents with the opportunity to explore different areas and aspects of the creeks in the region. Those interested in joining the celebrations are encouraged to check the official list of events for more information.
In the words of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, "Creek it up a notch" and join in the efforts to protect and conserve the valuable natural resource that is our city's creeks.
