Senators Thom Tillis and Alex Padilla, along with U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra and FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, have announced a significant advancement in enhancing the 9-8-8 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

Senator Tillis expressed his enthusiasm for the improvements, stating, “The 9-8-8 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline has been an important resource in connecting those in crisis with necessary care, and I’m excited about this next step to further improve the Lifeline.” He added, “Ensuring callers are routed to crisis centers based on their geographic location as opposed to their device’s area code will allow for a quicker and more localized response for individuals in crisis and, as co-chair of the Senate Mental Health Caucus, I’m proud that this new capability will soon become a reality.”

The initiative incorporates elements from the Local 9-8-8 Response Act of 2023, a proposal introduced by Senators Tillis and Padilla. This legislation aims to streamline the process of connecting 9-8-8 Lifeline callers with the nearest call center promptly to ensure they can access appropriate care and resources from mental health professionals and local public safety officials, all while safeguarding user privacy.

The bipartisan 9-8-8 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has been a vital support system for Americans in crisis. However, the current system routes calls based on area codes rather than the caller's location. As the awareness of the hotline grows, it becomes increasingly imperative to enable operators to efficiently link callers with a variety of mental health services and a comprehensive continuum of care.
