Eight Officers Shot, Four Officers Killed During Investigation

Charlotte, N.C. (April 30, 2024) – Today, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department held a press event to provide updates on the tragic attack on law enforcement officers in the North Tryon Division that occurred on Monday. During the event, CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings released information on the officers involved in the incident.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks, a 13-year veteran, tragically succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. CMPD Officer Christopher Tolley, Officer Michael Giglio, and Officer Jack Blowers were wounded but are in stable condition or have been released from the hospital. Officer Justin Campbell sustained a broken foot but has also been treated and released.

Speaking at the press conference, Chief Johnny Jennings stated, "Preliminary information indicates that 12 CMPD officers fired their service weapon. All 12 of those officers are on paid, administrative leave." The officers involved in the shooting incident are part of the Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force (CRFTF), which includes various law enforcement agencies.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with CMPD's Homicide Unit leading the effort. Detectives are currently focusing on the crime scene located in the 5000 block of Galway Drive in the North Tryon Division. Two females from the residence are cooperating with the investigation, and detectives have clarified that they are not seeking any additional suspects.

The U.S. Marshals Service Director Ronald Davis also shared that the task force involved in the operation has been active since January 2018 and includes multiple law enforcement agencies. As the investigation progresses, further details will be provided by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office.

The Charlotte community and law enforcement agencies have come together in solidarity during this difficult time. Governor Roy Cooper, Attorney General Josh Stein, Mayor Vi Lyles, and other officials have shown their support for the affected officers and their families.
