Former Panthers linebacker Jon Beason will be honored as this week's Legend of the Game when the Panthers face the Bengals. Beason, who was a first-round pick in 2007 from the University of Miami, played a key role during two successful periods in team history, including their 12-4 season in 2008 and the transition to the Ron Rivera/Cam Newton era.
Beason's career includes two All-Pro selections, three Pro Bowl appearances, and leading the league in tackles in 2008. Reflecting on his return to Charlotte, he expressed excitement about reconnecting with familiar faces and sharing old stories.
"It's good to see familiar faces and familiar beat writers," Beason said. "You want to come back and have it be nostalgic, but everything's so different."
Beason also spoke about his time playing alongside Julius Peppers, who will be recognized for making the Pro Football Hall of Fame. "We all knew Julius was special," Beason said. "As good of a player as he is, he's that kind of person."
Recalling one of Peppers' most memorable plays, Beason mentioned an interception against Arizona that showcased Peppers' athleticism. However, he highlighted Peppers' commitment during conditioning sessions as equally impressive.
Discussing his place among Panthers linebackers like Dan Morgan and Luke Kuechly, Beason emphasized the importance of veteran leadership and learning from experienced players. He praised Morgan's unexpected rise to NFL general manager despite his initially low-key demeanor.
"Dan's going to be able to look at guys and know what it takes," Beason noted.
Beason also shared thoughts on Sam Mills' legacy with the Keep Pounding tradition: "It just puts it at the forefront. Here's what we do."
Currently focused on family life and entrepreneurship, Beason cherishes time with his daughter Amaya: "I enjoy the time with the family, no doubt about it."
