The Panthers faced a challenging game in Washington, resulting in a 40-7 defeat. Defensive struggles and early offensive errors were significant factors in the loss. Quarterback Andy Dalton threw two interceptions in the first quarter, contributing to an early deficit that proved insurmountable for the team.

In their opening drive, Dalton's pass intended for Miles Sanders was intercepted by linebacker Dante Fowler Jr., who returned it 67 yards for a touchdown. The Panthers' subsequent possession ended with another interception, setting a negative tone for the remainder of the match.

Offensively, Carolina managed only 180 total yards and achieved just ten first downs throughout the game. Dalton completed 11 out of 16 passes for 93 yards but was hindered by his turnovers. In contrast, Washington's offense gained 421 yards, including 214 rushing yards.

Backup quarterback Bryce Young entered late in the game, completing two short passes for minus-four yards during his time on the field.

The Panthers suffered their eighth-largest loss margin in franchise history with this defeat. They previously experienced a significant loss at New Orleans earlier this season.

Washington's rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels left due to a rib injury when his team led 10-0. Marcus Mariota took over as quarterback and efficiently guided Washington to victory. His performance included a successful two-minute drill capped by a touchdown pass to Zach Ertz before halftime.

Carolina's defense struggled without key players; six of seven projected starters from their defensive front were absent due to injuries or reserve status. Only nose tackle Shy Tuttle played from the original lineup.

Additionally, kick returner Raheem Blackshear exited in the third quarter with a shoulder injury and did not return, leaving Xavier Legette and David Moore to handle returns for the rest of the game.
