Steve Smith Sr. has been named the 2024 Panthers Legend of the Year, acknowledging his contributions to the community and his involvement with alumni affairs for the team. Jeremy Kelley, Panthers director of Legends affairs, awarded Smith a $5,000 community grant to support his various initiatives.
Kelley highlighted Smith's active presence in Charlotte through large-scale projects like The Smith Family Behavioral Health Urgent Care (BHUC), which provides mental health and substance use disorder services. Kelley noted Smith's "resilience and consistent commitment to put others first and serve those in need is worthy of such recognition."
Smith's foundation focuses on mental health and wellness for families and underserved communities in Charlotte. It has raised over $4 million for local programs since its inception.
Reflecting on his time with the Ravens, Smith recalled learning from players like Torrey Smith and Ed Reed about community involvement but was reminded that Baltimore wasn't his city. Upon returning to Charlotte, he committed to investing back into the community.
Smith expressed his connection to Charlotte: "I always say this is my city... And now I get to see how the city is growing, and I'm growing with it."
His efforts include supporting domestic violence prevention, participating in WSOC's Coats For Kids Drive, organizing a Rally for Mental Health pickleball tournament, and engaging in meal distribution efforts.
Smith is hands-on with his foundation's work, choosing art and motivational materials for their offices. A poster at their entrance reads "Stay Curious," reflecting Smith's approach post-retirement as he engages in broadcasting and other ventures.
"I have a fantastic team that I've been able to work with who also keeps me in line," said Smith. He emphasized collaboration: "It's not just involved around hey what Steve thinks; it's about what is best for the community."
In addition to his philanthropic activities, Smith remains an ambassador for the Carolina Panthers organization. His involvement includes hosting events domestically and internationally, making him integral to both the community and the team's history.
