The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County are preparing for the 2025 Charlotte-Mecklenburg MLK National Holiday Celebration. The event aims to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, emphasizing unity, love, and service across diverse cultures.
On Wednesday, January 15, a commemorative service will be held at Marshall Park from noon to 1 p.m., featuring a wreath-laying ceremony. Later that day, the Stratford Richardson YMCA will host a panel discussion with members of the Divine 9 from 6-8 p.m.
A holiday parade is scheduled for Saturday, January 18. It will proceed along Tryon Street from Ninth Street to Brooklyn Village Avenue. Participants include over 100 community organizations and local performance groups. Those interested in joining must register by Friday, December 13.
"Growing the Dream," a luncheon recognizing unsung heroes who promote diversity and unity in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, invites nominations by Friday, December 6. The Medallion and Keeper of the Dream Awards seek nominees embodying Dr. King's ideals for annual recognition.
An arts showcase at West Charlotte High School on January 18 will feature student performances in spoken word, music, dance, and visual arts. Admission is $10.
Finally, "Back To The Basics," a nonprofit organization since 1997 focused on youth sports opportunities in Greater Charlotte, presents an arts multimedia display at Parr Center Theater on Sunday, January 19 from 4-6 p.m., engaging all ages with Dr. King's teachings.
