Dan Morgan, the general manager of the Carolina Panthers, has been active in the trade market during his first season in the role. Recently, he traded receiver Diontae Johnson to the Baltimore Ravens and Jonathan Mingo to the Dallas Cowboys, acquiring future draft picks for both players.
Morgan explained that trading Johnson was mutually beneficial for both parties. "He wanted a change of scenery, and we wanted to do things on our end as well," Morgan said. The Panthers received a fifth-round pick from the Ravens in exchange for Johnson and a sixth-round pick.
Regarding Mingo's trade to Dallas, Morgan emphasized that it was about building draft capital while providing Dallas with a young receiver they could develop. "They get a young player that they can grow and develop, and we get a draft pick that we're happy with," he stated.
The trades have increased Carolina's draft assets to nine picks next year, eight of which are in the first five rounds. This aligns with Morgan's strategy of building through the draft. "I think we're trying to build the roster the right way," he said.
Morgan addressed questions about other team members during his media session. He assured reporters that quarterback Bryce Young remains an integral part of their plans despite outside interest. "Didn't want to trade Bryce, still don't and committed to working with him," Morgan declared.
Morgan also spoke positively about head coach Dave Canales' first season and praised Adam Thielen's role in mentoring younger receivers like Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker.
On potential future trades or contracts for players like Chuba Hubbard and Jaycee Horn, Morgan mentioned ongoing discussions but refrained from revealing specifics. As for defensive improvements, he acknowledged challenges in stopping runs but expressed confidence in continued growth.
The Panthers' recent transactions reflect Morgan's vision for long-term development through strategic drafting while maintaining key players like Young and Thielen at pivotal positions.
