Firefighters from Charlotte brought holiday cheer to Levine Children’s Hospital by rappelling down the building in festive costumes. This annual event, now in its third year, featured characters like Santa Claus and the Grinch descending from twelve stories high to greet children inside.

Captain Jason Hardin explained how this tradition began: “A couple of us at the firehouse started talking about it after hearing about similar events from colleagues in other cities. We reached out to Atrium Health, and they loved the idea. The rest is history.”

The Special Operations Team, known for their technical rescue skills, coordinated with the hospital months in advance to ensure safety. On the day of the event, firefighters donned harnesses along with their costumes. Firefighter Justin Ranson dressed as Santa Claus prepared to wave at children watching eagerly from their windows.

“It’s become one of the most anticipated events of the year,” said Hardin. The event allows firefighters to visit nearly every window, bringing joy to young patients confined during a challenging season.

Hardin acknowledged that seeing children who could be their own strikes an emotional chord with many firefighters: “Some of the guys don’t want to admit it, but there’s been a lot of misty eyes on the ropes.”

Fire Chief Reginald Johnson emphasized that this event reflects Charlotte Fire's mission beyond emergencies: “It’s about serving our community in every way we can.”

What began as a simple idea has grown into a cherished tradition for both Levine Children’s Hospital and Charlotte Fire Department. Each year brings more elaborate costumes and greater excitement among participants.

“The partnership with Atrium Health has been incredible,” said Hardin. As plans evolve for future events, Charlotte Fire aims to bring joy to even more children through this unique display of holiday spirit.
