The City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services has shared important guidelines to ensure smooth waste collection during the holiday season. With increased neighborhood activity due to school holidays and visiting relatives, residents are reminded to park responsibly. The department advises using garages and driveways when possible, or parking close to the curb if street parking is necessary. This ensures that collection trucks can navigate streets safely.
Residents should maintain a distance of at least three feet between vehicles and collection carts, allowing drivers enough room for maneuvering. Additionally, it is recommended to keep a safe distance of 50 feet from collection trucks in operation.
For post-Christmas tree disposal, natural trees can be placed at the curb starting January 1st after removing all decorations. Artificial trees require scheduling for bulky item collection through various city services like online platforms or by calling 311. Wreaths also fall under bulky items due to their wiring.
With an influx of deliveries leading to more cardboard waste, residents are urged to break down boxes before placing them in recycling carts. Cardboard must fit loosely within the cart; otherwise, it may not be collected. For excess cardboard, full-service facilities in Mecklenburg County are available.
Styrofoam and packing peanuts are not recyclable and should be disposed of with regular trash. Gift packaging materials like ribbons and bags can be saved for reuse.
Detailed procedures and schedules can be accessed on curbit.charlottenc.gov as residents prepare for holiday waste management.
