Charlotte firefighters are engaging in specialized training sessions designed to enhance their rescue capabilities. The Ladder Company Training program by the Charlotte Fire Department is focused on equipping its personnel with advanced skills necessary for complex rescues, road incidents, and firefighting duties.
Captain Kevin Newell, a training officer at Charlotte Fire, emphasized the importance of preparedness and teamwork. “Ladder companies have to be proficient at several different factors,” said Newell. “From road rescues and extrication to our core firefighting duties, the range of skills required demands consistent and advanced training.”
The month-long initiative involves hands-on exercises with Rescue 42 struts, a stabilization tool for securing vehicles in challenging positions. “We’ve reviewed everything from basic stabilization techniques...to more advanced methods involving crib towers and understanding weight and height limitations,” explained Newell.
This program not only refreshes seasoned firefighters but also introduces new techniques. “Some of these firefighters have been with the department for years but have limited exposure to ladder-specific training," said Newell. Participants expressed enthusiasm about learning fresh approaches to familiar challenges.
Captain Brian Benson leads his team through vehicle extrication exercises focusing on safety and efficiency. Meanwhile, Captain Justin Miller supervises high-directional anchor system setups crucial for urban rescues.
“Training is the backbone of our success and the safety of our community,” stated Fire Chief Reginald Johnson. This dedication ensures that Charlotte Fire can handle various emergencies effectively.
The comprehensive nature of this training underscores Charlotte Fire's role as an all-hazards responder committed to excellence in emergency response.
