City of Charlotte issued the following announcement on Dec. 18.
The City of Charlotte is requesting the public's feedback on findings pertaining to the city ADA Self-Evaluation & Transition Plan specific to Public Rights of Way as presented by Cole and Associates, Inc.
The City of Charlotte is committed to providing safe and usable pedestrian facilities for all pedestrians, including those with accessibility needs.
A "Self-Evaluation" of the pedestrian facilities in the Public Rights-of-Way is required by the Department of Justice and necessary to determine if the existing facilities are compliant with ADA requirements. The City selected Cole and Associates, Inc. to assess the sidewalks, curb ramps, pedestrian signals with pushbuttons, accessible pedestrian signals and bus stops for ADA compliance using the 2010 ADA Standards and the Proposed Accessibility Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities in the Public Right-of-Way (PROWAG) published by the U.S. Access Board.
Please note there are currently two ADA efforts taking place within the City. This project covers the City's assets in the Public Rights-of-Way while the effort conducted by Altura Solutions is assessing the buildings, website, programs, activities and services offered by the City.
Residents and visitors, specifically those who meet the classifiers below, are asked to watch the recorded presentation, review the summary of findings and complete the survey online by January 31.
The city is seeking input from:
- Individuals with disabilities
- Family, friends and caregivers of individuals with disabilities
- Senior citizens
- Members of groups that provide transportation to individuals with disabilities
- Individuals with knowledge and experience with ADA
- Other interested residents and visitors
