Jalen Coker, a rookie wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers, has faced numerous challenges since joining the team as an undrafted free agent. Despite injuries that have plagued him throughout the season, Coker has shown potential and determination to prove his worth.
Reflecting on his journey, Coker said, "Even coming into OTAs and rookie minicamp and stuff, I still had lingering things... But you know, I just control what you can control." His performance last week against the Cowboys included an 83-yard touchdown and a career-high of four catches for 110 yards.
Panthers wide receivers coach Rob Moore attributed Coker's draft status to health issues before the draft and his background from a smaller school. "I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that he wasn't healthy going into the draft," Moore explained. However, Moore acknowledged Coker's talent: "When you turn on the tape, you can see the talent."
Coker's ability to compete against top players was evident in practice sessions. Moore noted, "He was able to create separation... He's got really good hands." Veteran player Adam Thielen praised Coker's skill set: "The way that he moves is usually not a guy that's 220 pounds."
Coker's journey began when he signed with the Panthers in May. After overcoming various obstacles, including being waived and re-signed to the practice squad, he joined the active roster following Thielen's injury. Since then, he has made significant contributions on game days.
Looking ahead, Coker plans to focus on maintaining peak physical condition during the offseason. He aims to follow Thielen's example for longevity in his career. "I feel like there's definitely going to be a lot of mobility, a lot of receiver work," Coker stated.
Despite occasional moments of disbelief about his NFL career, Coker remains confident in his future. He concluded with optimism: "I just know I'm going to be able to push through this to come out on top."
