Jon Rhattigan and Jacoby Windmon are set to take on larger roles in the Carolina Panthers' defense as injuries have depleted their lineup. With Trevin Wallace and Claudin Cherelus placed on injured reserve, the Panthers will rely on these players to fill the gaps.
Rhattigan, a former Seattle Seahawk claimed off waivers in August, has primarily been a special teams player. "My style of playing special teams, I like to shoot my shot," he explained. However, with increased defensive responsibilities looming, Rhattigan is adapting his approach. He has played just one defensive snap this season but remains prepared for more action.
Windmon, a rookie from Michigan State who joined the Panthers from the Steelers' practice squad in October, also faces an accelerated learning curve. "I kind of feel like I prepare the same week every week," Windmon said, noting that his preparation must intensify with his new role.
Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero praised both players for their readiness. "We've seen a lot of great things from these guys in terms of their preparation," Evero stated. Both Rhattigan and Windmon have spent extra time learning the system alongside starter Josey Jewell.
Jewell's experience will be crucial against a run-heavy Cardinals offense this Sunday. His guidance has been invaluable for Rhattigan and Windmon as they prepare to step up. "Having a guy like Josey in the room is somebody that's really beneficial to learn from," said Rhattigan.
The upcoming game will serve as an introduction for many fans to these players who have been diligently preparing behind the scenes. Evero expressed confidence in their readiness: "These guys have been preparing the entire time... now they have their opportunity."
